In an ambitious project aimed at transforming the Malvinas Islands into a strategic hub, the occupying authorities of the archipelago announced the construction of a port terminal that will attract cruise ships, fishing vessels, research, oil, and industrial vessels. The initiative will be carried out through an agreement with the British shipyard Harland & Wolff and aims to become a gateway to Antarctica for European countries. The initial investment in the project will be around $150 million. The Marambio Foundation has been warning that the initiative can put Argentina’s Antarctic policy at risk.
