The sour expressions of Presidents Milei and Lula during their meeting at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, along with Milei’s remarks about potentially severing ties with Brasília, reflect only one aspect of the Brazil-Argentina relationship in the ultraliberal leader’s first year.Friction was accompanied by pragmatic efforts. Diplomats on both sides worked to maintain trade ties. The energy sector provided an example of that pragmatism. In May, a Petrobras gas tanker diverted its course, docked on the Paraná River, and, after swift diplomatic coordination, mitigated an energy supply crisis in Argentina. In another instance of collaboration, Brazil took responsibility for managing Argentina’s interests and embassy building in Caracas, Venezuela, after Milei’s diplomatic team was expelled by Nicolás Maduro.
